DESCRIPTION
Press pause on life to immerse yourself in creativity, contemplation, and connection. Together, we will honor our human need for self-reflection as we seek a deeper understanding of our own thoughts and experiences related to living fully and dying prepared. Welcoming deathcare providers, death literacy advocates, and curious mortals alike!

Our “manual” for the immersion will be The Death Doula’s Guide to Living Fully and Dying Prepared. The format of this interactive workbook was largely inspired by Francesca’s own “Death Journal,” what she calls the remembrance project she’s been making for her beloveds for the end of her life—whenever that occurs.
Inside its pages, a death journal can contain mementos, messages, song lyrics, poetry, quotes, “core self” lists (“Happiness Is…,” “Comfort Is…,” and others about gratitude and beliefs) as well as preferences for end-of-life care and disposition.
“Basically, it’s me on a page. It’s what I’ve loved and why. It’s my words and wishes. When they open it, my loved ones will hear my voice. And hopefully, they’ll feel my love.” -Francesca
INTENTIONS
- Contemplation: Feel invited to reflect back, turn inward, and plan ahead.
- Creativity: Tap into your imagination and natural insightfulness.
- Connection: Connect to yourself and a community of kindreds.
Expect topic talks, group discussions, partner debriefs, and reflective writing. During our time together, you will create the beginnings of your own Death Journal.
“In order to understand the world, one has to turn away from it on occasion.” – Albert Camus
TOPICS
- First, we will bring our whole selves and hearts together by setting intentions and making a communal altar.
- Next, we will discuss ingrained messaging and past experiences with mortality while exploring our own healing presence.
- Then, we will focus on healthy preparedness as we create components of our Death Journals and consider how we might be held in the memories of others.
- Infused throughout will be guided visualizations and contemplative prompts to foster clarity.
By the end of our immersion, your Death Journal will contain a number of unique, inspired entries with plenty of space for continued work!

“Francesca has a gift for facilitating and bringing a baseline of calm and flow to her work. Her presence made the retreat.” –Lauren Agrella-Sevilla
“Francesca, I most appreciate the care and thought that went into bringing this retreat to life. You created a beautiful way to investigate living and dying, boldly, gently and honestly without pretense or judgment. I’m still expressing thanks for our time in Monchique. It’s changed me. I’m living life from a wider perspective and welcoming death to tag along.” –Retreat Participant
“This program should be part of required training for all medical and nursing students and strongly suggested for those in practice.” –Robert Varipapa MD

- I am thrilled at the way the circle of people came together in the course of the week to provide a safe and nurturing space or processing death wellness.
- Amazing interaction with Francesca and participants.
- Getting in touch more deeply with my own feelings on death (and life!).

- Most beneficial was listening to people’s experiences and ideas. What I enjoyed most was the camaraderie and laughter.
- Just thank you thank you thank you. First rate experience.
